Luncheon Meat!!

SINGAPORE - The agent of a popular mainland canned pork product has initiated a recall and suspended sales after tests showed a sample contained a cancer-causing antibiotic.

The Centre for Food Safety yesterday revealed this after laboratory tests showed a sample of Shanghai Ma Ling B2 340g pork luncheon meat (less sodium) was found to have traces of nitrofurans. The batch number is B2 5 for the product, which carries a best-before date of December 26, 2009 . According to the sole agent, the canned pork was imported on only two occasions - last December and January this year.

The scare spread when Singapore's Agri -Food and Veterinary Authority detected carcinogenic traces in a consignment of canned pork from Ma Ling and Gulong food processing factories. These brands have been banned from entering Singapore since August 2007 for containing nitrofurans (an anti biotic for pigs). Not sure if this batch enters our shores but certainly we sell these brands!

Pork loving Malaysians pls be cautious !-

DIY Preserved Bamboo Shoots

First, cut disposable chopsticks into small pieces. Preferbably use brand new chopsticks.

Immerse them in a pot of wine for several days. You can use rice wine or white wine.

Add in flavoring (salt). If you like something spicy, you can add some ground blackpepper.

Add in soda bicarbonate
Add in some sugar. Try to use icing sugar. Avoid using rock sugar.

Add in some soya sauce. Kikkoman is the best here.
Bring it to boil for several minutes.
Store it in a jar and let it cool before sealing it. Place it in a cool dry place for preservation.

It is ready to serve when the "bamboo shoots" absorbs all the gravy in the jar.

You can eat it straight from the jar...

Or stir fry it with vegetable and chicken fillet.

Restoran Syed Abu

Take note of what you order from our local Indian Muslim restaurants, especially the one near the post office in Damansara Jaya. A colleague and I were shocked to find a cockroach in our nasi lemak yesterday morning.

To be precise it was in the sambal or chilli paste. The worst part of it all was that the shop owner even after clearing our plates continued to sell the dish to other patrons. Can you imagine if children were to eat it?

Yoong Kie Seafood Restaurant

Last week, I brought my guests to Genting Highlands. After a day 'above the clouds', we decided to have dinner at the Gohtong Jaya area on the way down.

We ordered some dishes and decided to have a steamed fish as well. So the captain recommended 'sultan fish' a.k.a jelawat. The steamed fish came in HALF and plain steamed. Good & fine.

But when the bill came, it comes to over $500!! We were shocked!! We were told the fish was 1.4kg (& please bear in mind, its ONLY HALF A FISH ) at RM 320 per kg!RM 420!! This was daylight robbery. We were not informed by the Captain that a kg of the Sultan fish would cost us RM 320 and there was also no signs of such pricings anywhere in the restaurant.

When we checked with the cashier, she told us, its correct!! Of cos, it was our mistake for not asking the price first.

Anyway, on the way back to KL, we stopped at Unique Seafood,PJ, where one can choose a live fish. The most expensive Soon Hock swimming in the tank is RM135 per kilo. Asked them about the Sultan fish, it is going for RM100 a kilo.

Will be sending this letter to the newspapers, Tourism board, etc etc; and friends, pls pass on to all on yr email list.

CHEATED.
